A four-year-old boy, suffering from high fever for the past four days, has been lying on the floor of his house with his grandmother waving a hand-fan to make him feel better. This is just one of the instances of how people are suffering in the Kanawani Pustapur village where life has come to a standstill because of lack of electricity.

Speaking to DNA, Kailashu Devi (65) said that her grandson hasn't been able to sleep because of lack of electricity.

"We moved to this locality in 2016 and since then the condition hasn't improved. Electricity is the first and foremost need of a household. The children are the ones who are suffering the most. My grandson hasn't slept well for 20 days now and keeps crying because of the heat," said Devi.

She said that they get water through submersible pumps, but are now forced to buy water, which is unhygenic.

"We buy bottled water for the child, while we buy buckets of water for other household chores. We are left with no choice than to spend money despite paying heavy electricity bills," rued Devi.

Nazmi Khatoon, a mother of three, recalls that her five-year-old daughter suffered an injury on her forehead after she stumbled and fell in the dark a few days ago.

"We can't control children all the time. My daughter was playing when she toppled and fell in the dark room," said Khatoon.

"I have to put a wet towel or keep waving the hand fan the entire night so that my children can have a peaceful sleep," said Sushila Chadha.

Another problem that the villagers are facing is that of vector-borne diseases as they are forced to sleep in the open because of the heat. To add to this, many complain that changes of theft have increased manifold as the miscreants take advantage of the dark.
