The police have lodged an FIR based on a complaint filed by the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration against the varsity's student union members, for pulling off a CCTV camera installed in one of the hostels.

The JNU Students Union (JNUSU) members had removed the CCTV camera installed in the Brahmaputra hostel on Friday, to protest against the 'surveillance rule'.

"An FIR has been registered against JNUSU President Mohit Pandey and four other members under IPC Sections 341 (wrongful restraint) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs 50) in Vasant Kunj police station," police said.

While the JNU administration maintained that they have been following the directions of the High Court, students claimed they have not followed the required procedure to install 'surveillance' equipment at the campus.

Meanwhile, CCTV cameras have already been installed at the varsity's gates and the administrative building, where students generally hold protests. "We won't allow them to install the surveillance equipment in our hostels. By resisting this undemocratic surveillance, we are not doing anything wrong," Pandey added.
