Intensifying their ongoing stir against the UGC notification issued in May, 2016, which amends the admission policy, hundreds of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students, along with teachers, took out a protest march to the Parliament on Tuesday.

Scores of students led by the JNU Students' Union have been protesting at the administrative building since February 9 against the implementation of the UGC notification that makes viva a major criterion for admission into MPhil and PhD courses and also cuts down the number of seats in these courses.

"The Vice-Chancellor (V-C), in his February 13 press conference, made it clear that he is virtually closing down the annual admissions in JNU's MPhil/PhD programmes. He claims that the UGC notification suggesting an ideal 'student-supervisor ratio' is 'binding' on JNU, and so, admissions will be offered only if and when a supervisor is guiding less than the specified number of students," Students' Union President Mohit Pandey said.

He added, "This not only means a closure of annual entrance exams and admissions but also leads to an absurd situation where students will no longer be allotted supervisors based on their topics and supervisors' fields of expertise, but arbitrarily on the basis of which supervisor happens to be guiding fewer students than the number 'specified' by the UGC circular," he added.

Several Members of Parliament and leaders of CPI, Congress, and JD(U), also took part in the protest march. They included Digvijaya Singh of Congress, D Raja of CPI, and Ali Ahmed Ansari of JD-U.

The varsity, meanwhile, termed the students' occupation of the administration building "illegal" and appealed to them to vacate the space with immediate effect. "A handful of staffers and officers, including the V-C, were debarred from carrying out their day-to-day duties by a small group of unruly students. The administration has made repeated efforts to conduct talks with them but they are not ready to vacate the place," the administration said in a statement.
