Ten days after Najeeb Ahmed went missing under mysterious circumstances, hundreds of students from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), joined by several other varsities, took out a protest march from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar on Monday.

Students from JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia, Ambedkar University and Aligarh Muslim University, along with Najeeb's family came up in arms against the JNU authorities for their 'insensitivity' in handling the missing student's case.

A delegation of students, led by JNU student union's president, Mohit Pandey, met the Lt Governor Najeeb Jung and submitted a memorandum to him, seeking his intervention in the case.

"Even after getting no trace regarding Najeeb's whereabouts, the Delhi police have not done any interrogation to ascertain the facts. We got to know that a SIT is formed but we want speedy action must be taken in this very case and day to day development must be informed by the JNU community. We want your intervention so that no dilly-dallying tactics could be used by Delhi police," the memorandum read.

"The JNU administration has still not deemed to issue a single direct appeal to Najeeb assuring him of safety and justice," it further reads.

Communist Party of India (CPI) leader, Sitaram Yechury, who joined the students at Jantar Mantar and met Najeeb's mother, said, "In a democracy like us, it is completely unacceptable that a person is missing since last ten days and nobody knows of his whereabouts."

Earlier on Monday, Yechury met President Pranab Mukherjee seeking his intervention in Najeeb's case.

"Today I met the honourable President of India as a visitor from JNU seeking his intervention. He is also not sure about what has happened but I'm sure he will convey the message to the HRD ministry," Yechury said, assuring the agitating students of taking every possible effort to trace the missing student.

Meanwhile, Delhi police doubled the cash reward declared for giving information about Najeeb from Rs 50,000 to 1,00,000.

"In order to trace Najeeb, SIT, and over a dozen of different police teams have been formed were dispatched to different locations. Each team has been assigned to trace and get clues about the missing student," DCP (South) Ishwar Singh said in a statement.

Najeeb Ahmed, a first-year MSc student who lives in room number 106 of Mahi Mandvi hostel, went missing on October 15, following an altercation with some ABVP activists the night before.

Following the incident, the Varsity is on the boil with students alleging the authority of showing not making serious efforts for tracing Najeeb and the authority blaming students of using 'undemocratic' ways of protest.
