Trying to end her relationship on a good note proved fatal for a 16-year-old girl who was murdered in cold blood by her boyfriend. The accused, identified as Jitendra Kumar Sharma was arrested on Tuesday evening.

According to the police, the accused allegedly pushed her off from an eight-foot-high wall, where the couple was sitting on Monday evening, when she met Sharma in Alipur area, after her coaching class.

After he found her alive he dragged her to a nearby fence and strangled her to death before fleeing away.

The murder came to light when the girl's body was found in a field in Alipur area on Tuesday. On the same day, the girl's parents had approached the police saying their daughter was missing since Monday.

According to the family of the girl, the latter had left the house for computer coaching class at Sant Nagar on Monday at around 5.30 pm.

"She usually returns home by 7 pm, but when she didn't return by 8 pm that day we got worried. After numerous failed attempts to reach her on her mobile number, we called up the tutor of the coaching centre. He told us that she had left for home after the class. After looking for her for more than an hour, we lodged a missing complaint," said the girl's mother. After the body was found, the police called up the parents for identification and subsequently the girl was identified.

"During primary investigation, the family revealed that she was carrying a mobile phone which was not recovered from the spot. With the help of technical surveillance, it was found that her SIM card was still active, but the phone was not hers. Based on this the accused was identified and was arrested from his house in Burari area," said Nupur Prasad, Deputy commissioner of police (north).

During interrogation, Sharma broke down and confessed to having committed the crime as he suspected her on cheating on him.

"He further revealed that the girl wanted to discontinue the relationship, however, he was against it. In a fit of rage, he pushed her off the wall and later strangled her with her dupatta. He even punched her on her face to make identification difficult for the police. He also took away her phone to check if she was talking to other men beside him along with her bag which contained her identity cards and other documents," said Prasad.

The accused have been booked for murder.
