Long duty hours, poor working conditions and trivial things like lack of stationary were listed as grievances by cops in Delhi at a session conducted on behevioural aspects of police officials by the psychology department of Jamia Millia Islamia.

The University held the session on request of Delhi Police to identify areas that need to be corrected and sensitise officials towards public grievances.

“They have their own issues. While most of them roared about their long working hours, some officials even complained that they are deprived of even trivial things like stationary items leading to frustration and anxiety among them,” said Dr Sheema Aleem, a professor at psychology department, Jamia.

When the professors asked them to try and make people who approach them with their grievances, specifically women, comfortable, their reaction left the faculty members surprised. “How can one except us to welcome people with smiles when we don’t even have pen and paper to write their problems?” asked a police official.

According to Aleem, who supervised the session attended by more than 80 police officials at Chittaranjan Park police station last month, said, “Initially they were hesitant of sharing their issues with us but as the session proceeded they told us about the difficulties they have been facing for years.”

The police personnel, who attended the session, however, said that it is very important to have such sessions regularly. “One session won’t make any difference on  the psychology of working officers,” a senior police officer said.

On being asked about what prompted them to organise the session he said “It is important to break the monotony in the life of police official. The exercise also helps in sensitising them towards public grievances.”

MOU WITH COPS

The Psychology department at Jamia Millia Islamia, however, said that it would conduct another session only after the Delhi police will sign a memorandum of understanding with them.  “The Delhi police had approached us through varsity registrar to conduct another such session but we have made it clear that this time it has to be official. They should sign a memorandum with the department first so that we can come up with some strategy on how to impart the training,” said Ghazi Shah, head of the Psychology department at Jamia.
