Farmers in Noida have threatened to stall infrastructural projects as issues related to compensation, after their land was acquired for the projects, are still pending. The farmers have given the Noida Authority an ultimatum to settle these issues.
It is pertinent to mention that the Noida Authority has to give additional compensation to farmers whose lands were acquired by the previous governments. The farmers are also entitled to developed plots in lieu of their land. These two major issues have been pending for years.
A few months ago, the farmers had protested and had even held residents and officers hostage inside the Noida Authority office for hours.
The farmers said that the officials made false promises to them, and that they plan to intensify their stir in the coming days and halt any construction work in the area. They said they will start with Sector 150, where, according to them, many political leaders have invested.
Begraj Gurjar, Vice-President of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Bhanu), said farmers had earlier met with former Noida Authority CEO PK Agrawal, Deputy CEO Saumya Srivastav, Additional CEO Shisheer, and other officers to work out a solution, but they received only empty assurances as usual.
“Last month, these officers had given us in written that they will start the work within 10 days but no action has been taken even after a month. These officers are just buying time. We know that if we are peaceful, they will not pay any heed to our demands. This has forced farmers to take law in their hands,” Gurjar said.
He added: “Now, we are not going to take it easy. If our demands are not met, we will not only halt the projects but also gherao the homes of the officers.” he further said other ways to express their angst will also be adopted, such as burning effigies, performing last rites of the Noida Authority, etc.
