Connaught Place (CP) is all set to have the Capital’s first digital user interface centre to guide people on availing public utilities in the Lutyens’ Zone. These small ‘go to’ kiosks would function as one-stop shop for amenities such as booking railway tickets, birth and death certificates and getting your passports made, among other facilities.

The pilot project will be launched by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) next summer. These units will be called Point of Delivery (POD) systems.

“We have identified four to five locations to set up these units. The first one has been planned in CP while others include central places such as Yashwant Place and Shastri Park,” a senior NDMC official said.

The civic body looking after the Lutyens’ zone will experiment with the system and the user response, on the basis of which more units will be planned. The idea, the official said, is to have these units set up in those public places where a large number of people come on a daily basis.

The civic body will float an open tender for the scheme. The officials, however, were not keen to divulge the estimated cost of the project. “We will float the tender by next week and hope to complete the project within the next five months. The cost will depend on the bidders and will be negotiated later,”he added.

What’s a POD

It is a technology-driven information centre allowing video-based interaction to assist people. According to officials associated with the project, through this system, consumers will be able to have a live interaction with experts on the subjects concerned.

“Officials working in the related sectors will guide people through video-conferencing. They could be doctors, officials attending to death and birth certificates or passports, and so on. We still need to work out the modalities. The point is to assist people who would like to avail any kind of government service,”said an official.

The civic body will also hire a private IT company to help develop the software. In addition, the PODs will have hi-definition screens for the interface as well as a printing facility.
