Flying international from the Delhi airport? No need to fear the serpentine queues anymore, as the authorities have decided to increase the number of immigration counters to tackle the peak hour rush. Senior officials said the department also faces staff shortage but efforts are being made to reduce the inconvenience caused to passengers.

The number of international travellers from the airport has seen a constant rise in recent years. According to sources, at present, the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has 95 immigration counters at both the departure and the arrival terminals. Officials said the number of counters as well as staffers will witness a significant increase now.

“With the number of international flyers seeing a continuous rise, the need to increase the number of counters and staffers was felt. Accordingly, measures were taken. This would help us tackle the heavy inflow of passengers during the peak time. It will also lead to less inconvenience to passengers,” a senior official said.

“As per the latest International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) report, Delhi airport has shown the world’s highest passenger growth rate of 19.1 per cent. The airport has also achieved 1,185 flight movements a day, on an average. Increased flight movements have led to an inflow of giant aircraft such as airbus A380 and A350 to Delhi. In November last year, the IGIA recorded the highest flight movements an hour, which was 82. With such increased numbers, the services also need to be stepped up,” he added.

Meanwhile, as per data, Dubai remained the favourite destination of international travellers flying out of Delhi airport last year. As many as 13 per cent of total international passengers flew to Dubai, while London remained the second choice, with over 6 per cent passengers heading there. Bangkok, Singapore, and Kathmandu were the third, fourth, and fifth preference of international flyers, respectively.

Also, in 2016, 55.64 million passengers visited the IGIA, which was 10 million more than the previous year. The airport was recently counted among the world’s 15 busiest airports for November, 2016. This was established after the ICAO published a report last year, stating IGIA to be the 12th busiest airport in the world.
