Delhi BJP Chief Manoj Tiwari on Friday said they will ask the Centre to make amendments in the Delhi Municipal Act, so that they are not dependent on the AAP government for funds
After Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal waived off the house tax sop, BJP has announced that if voted to power, they will seek amendment of the Delhi Municipal Act to make the corporation more independent.
Delhi BJP Chief Manoj Tiwari on Friday said they will ask the Centre to make amendments in the Delhi Municipal Act, so that they are not dependent on the AAP government for funds. "We want that the Centre should directly allot funds to us for development," Tiwari said.
He further said that because of the civic bodies' dependence on the Delhi government, the people of Delhi have to face many difficulties. Citing the condition of sanitation workers, he said: "Everyone is entitled to salary. The AAP government did not release funds for salaries and that made things worse in the city. If voted to power, we will seek independence from the Delhi government."
There has been a constant battle between the cash-strapped corporations and the Delhi government over the release of funds. Till now, the corporations are given grants by the Delhi government for basic functioning.
The Bhojpuri actor-turned-politician said: "If voted to power, we will approach the Centre to make necessary amendments to the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act to bring it directly under the Union government." The DMC Act was last amended in 2011, bringing it under the state government.
The tussle between the BJP-ruled corporations and the Kejriwal-led Delhi government has resulted in two major safai karamchari strikes in the last two years. In protest, the workers kept dumping the city's garbage on the streets. They had not received their salaries for months together, because the government had not released funds to the civic bodies.
In addition, Tiwari said that once in power, the BJP will write to the Centre to again unify the three corporations. "Considering that the south MCD cannot help the north and east corporations, which are struggling to pay their staffers, we will write to the Centre to unify the MCD," he said.
The MCD was trifurcated in 2012. Of the three corporations, the south is self-sufficient but the north and the east have been struggling for funds. Elections for all three are scheduled for April 23.
