After increasing the number of ventilators in Delhi government hospitals, the Delhi government is aiming to upgrade ultrasound machines. A large number of hospitals in the Capital are reeling under an acute shortage of these machines.

"We have to provide details about the average load of patients per month for the ultrasound examination and also the specification of the requested machines. If the government is able to meet the demand, one of the major problems of the hospitals will be solved," said a senior doctor from a Delhi government hospital.

The Directorate General of Health Services has asked all the heads of hospitals to prepare a report about the working condition of existing machines in the hospital and state if there are any shortages. The medical superintendents of the hospital are supposed to prepare the report and submit it to the concerned officials in a meeting scheduled for June 14.

There are 38 government hospitals in Delhi. In a reply to an RTI this year, it was stated that 11 hospitals do not have functional CT scan machines, ultrasound machines and MRI machines.

But some of the senior doctors are apprehensive about the decision. "The government had increased the number of ventilators but many of them are still not functional," a senior doctor said.

Many patients complain that most of the big government hospitals in Delhi do not have enough diagnostic facilities and even the available ones don't work most of the time. For ultrasound, the waiting time is 90 days whereas CT scan takes around 40-45 days. An MRI, on the other hand, may take up to three years. Also, the MRI facility is available only in Lok Nayak hospital.
