Accused Raja and his accomplice were captured on CCTV camera; frequent police raids kept the two on toes and they could not change their clothes after incident
The unique style sense of his accomplice led to the arrest of the accused in the Hauz Khas Village rape case. The accused, identified as Raja, 19, a resident of Chandra Vihar near Hauz Khas, and his friend were arrested late on Monday night.
Police said Raja's friend, name withheld, was wearing a white wrist watch and sporting a striking hairdo on the day of the incident. These details were captured on the CCTV camera in the vicinity. As the cops kept on conducting tireless raids in the area in the last two days, the accomplice also kept on changing his hideouts and did not get a chance to change his clothes. As a result, he was easily spotted and nabbed.
Revealing more details about the case, police said late on Saturday night, the 24-year-old victim, a native of Nagaland, and a friend stepped out of a restaurant after a party in the Hauz Khas Village area around 12.30am.
"It was then that Raja, along with his friend, approached the women and offered to drop them home. The accomplice asked the victim's friend to come with him in an auto, convincing her that it was a cheaper option. Raja then told the victim that her friend had gone towards the Deer Park. Then he took her to an isolated spot and raped her. In a bid to free herself, the victim smashed Raja's face with a stone. After threatening her of dire consequences, he scaled the wall of the park and fled," DCP (south) Ishwar Singh said.
Raja even took the victim's money and iPhone. The victim reportedly agreed to go with the accused because he was known to her. He used to frequently visit the spa where she worked. It turned out that he was an employee of a pub in the nearby area.
The Crime and Forensics team found a wallet belonging to one of the accused from the spot, through which they were identified.
"The CCTV footage from one of the restaurants helped the police identify Raja's accomplice because of his hairstyle and a white watch that he was wearing. His house was raided but he could not ne found. He was later spotted sleeping in a park and was nabbed. His interrogation led to Raja's arrest," a senior police officer said.
Over 10 special teams were formed and monitored directly by senior police officers to crack the case.

- 12.30am: Victim and her friend leave a pub and start looking for a ride.
- 12.40am: Accused Raja's friend approaches the women and offers them a drop home.
- 1am: Raja's friend and the victim's friend leave in an auto. Raja then tells the victim that he knew where her friend was and takes her to a pond in the Deer Park.
- 1.30-2.15am: Raja assaults and rapes the victim.
- 2.30am: Raja takes her money and iPhone, and flees.2.45am: Victim manages to reach a police post and reports the matter.
