Fog slows down life in Capital

The Capital was gripped in a cold wave as mercury plummeted on the second day of 2018. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 17.7 degrees Celsius, which was two notches below the normal while the minimum temperature settled at 8 degrees Celsius.

The Capital also witnessed this season's coldest day on Monday when the minimum temperature dipped to 5.7 degrees Celsius, one degree below the season's average. Maximum temperature, meanwhile, was 20.1 degrees Celsius, a notch above season's average.

Foggy conditions in and around the city prevailed as visibility dropped considerably on Monday and Tuesday. According to the meteorological department, there will not be any respite from cold weather till next week as mercury will steadily drop. The minimum temperature on Wednesday is likely to be six degrees Celsius. It will then decrease further on Thursday, to five degrees Celsius. On Wednesday, the maximum temperature is predicted to be 19 degrees Celsius, and then rise by few notches. It will hover between 20 degrees to 21 degrees Celsius for the next one week.

The weather department has also predicted a dense fog on Wednesday. The city will be shrouded in a thick blanket of fog till the next week.

Life was thrown out of gear on Tuesday as vehicular traffic on roads battled negligible visibility due to fog. Traffic on most roads, including DND, Ashram, Central Delhi inched slowly in the morning as people headed out to offices after the long weekend. The fog had started to set in on Monday night, worsening by morning.

According to the weatherman, Delhiites should look forward to lesser fog cover only by forenoon on Wednesday.

Runway visibility at the airport on Tuesday morning remained between 600 metres to 1000 metres, delaying departure and arrival of a number of flights. A runway visibility of 75 metres is required for landing while it is 125 metres for take-offs.
