After a journalist’s molestation case at ITO Metro station last year, the  safety of women in connecting subways and adjoining dark areas of a Metro station became the point of argument. In a big relief to women passengers, CISF has developed “Flying Squads” to keep women in and around the metro stations safe.

The all women combat-expert group - Flying Squads, will be deployed to patrol unpaid areas which were technically not covered by the force earlier.

Senior officers from the Central Industrial Security Force on Friday said that these flying squads are CISF women commandos teamed and trained in martial art “Pekiti-Tirsia- Kali” to make them experts in free-style combat, fighting in enclosed areas, taking down armed opponents bare handed and in effective evacuation techniques.

A senior CISF officer said 22 such Flying Squads have been formed so far specially keeping in mind the safety of women passengers. He said that the frequency of patrolling by the Quick Reaction Teams has also been increased. He also said that certain grey areas where often incidents like crime have been reported have been identified and are under constant CCTV and manual surveillance.

According to the latest data, in January 2018 alone, 281 cases of crime were reported to CISF and the force apprehended 68 suspects on the basis of received complaints or suspicion. Last year, the force was reported 4394 crimes and the number of criminals apprehended was 965.

Earlier, CISF carried out a passenger feedback survey in 2017 at eight airports - Bangalore, Chennai, Cochin, Kolkata, Mumbai, Guwahati, Hyderabad and Delhi, for a period of 30 days from October 1, 2017 to October 30. The survey was aimed to get feedback directly from the travelling passengers about the quality of services being rendered by CISF and to assess the performance of ASG personnel at airports. As a result of the feedback survey, on a scale of 5, the passengers had graded overall security and services of CISF as 4.73. CISF has been graded overall maximum 4.80 out of 5 in the category of “feeling of being safe and secure”, the officer said.
