Five policemen, including a Station House Officer (SHO), were injured as they came under attack by an irate crowd in northeast Delhi's Karawal Nagar on Tuesday.

Trouble started in the area around 9 am when a group of locals objected to two minor girls visiting some male friends instead of going to school.

"Some locals, who saw these girls entering a house, created a ruckus outside... As some boys who were inside the house came out, the mob attacked them. In the meantime, somebody made a PCR call and a police team reached the spot," said a police officer.

Police found that the mob was abusing the girls and, worried about their safety, Karawal Nagar SHO Jasoda Singh intervened and asked the locals to disperse.

"The mob then resorted to stone pelting in which five policemen, including Singh, were injured. The windscreen of a police vehicle was also damaged in the incident," the officer said.

"Soon, reinforcement was rushed to the spot which brought the situation under control and the girls were safely handed over to their parents," the officer said.

Police have registered a case of rioting at Karawal Nagar police station and 10 people have been arrested in this connection so far.
