Ex-husband stabs woman for claiming money to wed daughter

The incident took place outside a district court in Surajpur, Greater Noida. Police are trying to trace the assailants.

A woman was allegedly stabbed by her ex-husband and his kin on Saturday, when she asked him to give some money for marrying off their 18-year-old daughter. The incident took place outside a district court in Surajpur, Greater Noida. Police are trying to trace the assailants.

According to senior police officers, the incident took place around 5 pm on Saturday, when the 35-year-old woman who had gone to the court to attend a hearing of her case. It was when she was exiting the court that a group of men attacked her with a knife. She claimed that her former husband and his brothers were a part of the group. Police say that the woman was stabbed on her back and also sustained injuries on her hand.

Afsana, the victim, then cried for help and managed to gather locals. She also called up the police, but by the time the police team arrived at the spot, the accused had fled.

"The victim was married to one Aslam, a resident of Jewar, two decades ago, and has an 18-year-old daughter from him. Later, due to differences, the couple sought a divorce, following which the woman took custody of the daughter identified as Fiza. Both of them are now married to different persons.

"Afsana also told police that she was arranging for their daughter's wedding and had filed a case against the ex-husband for refusing to provide any financial help," said a senior police officer.

Girish Kumar Kotiya, SHO, Surajpur, said, "The woman told us that her ex-husband refused to cough up the necessary amount and threatened to kill her. The matter is being probed from all possible angles and CCTV footage from the vicinity are also being checked to ascertain the sequence of events. "The woman also told police that after the hearing of her case, Aslam, along with three of his relatives identified as Wasim, Mannu, and Islam intercepted her outside the court. "She was asked to sit in a car. On refusing to do that and raising an alarm, her former husband attacked her with a knife," he said.
