The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) officials will soon be commuting to work in electric sedans. The civic body has tied up with the Union Ministry of Power to procure 80 electrically-run sedans. The e-vehicles are likely to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 20 in the Capital.

"We are expecting to get 20 sedans in the first phase. The e-vehicle project will also be launched for other states this month and is likely to be inaugurated by the PM," said a senior official.

Most of the NDMC officials at present use old ambassadors. The NDMC is yet to sign an MOU with the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under the Power Ministry for the project.

"The e-sedans can go up to 140 km at a time and can run up to the speed of 100 kmph. The cars are electrically charged for which we have developed several charging stations, including Shivaji Stadium and Palika Kendra," the official informed.

The e-sedans will cost around Rs 10 lakh each, which the civic body will have to purchase from the company under the ministry at a subsidised rate.

Using e-vehicles to combat pollution was one of the projects under the government's Smart City Mission — Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship project. Under the mission, the NDMC had to also run electric buses to ferry commuters in order to make commercial hubs such as Connaught Place (CP) and Khan Market vehicle-free.

"We are exploring getting electric buses for the vehicle-free experiment, which is in process. We will conduct a survey to plan the routes for the same," another official said.

However, the plan for making the clogged CP vehicle-free has hit many roadblocks over the past two years. Initially, the Traffic Police had not given its nod to the project. The plan also drew flak from both the public and traders protested against it.

According to the officials, procuring the battery-powered vehicles such as buses and cycles on hire for providing last mile connectivity from parking spot at Shivaji Stadium to CP's inner circle has been a major challenge in order to take-off with the plan.
