The Congress-affiliated National Student Union of India (NSUI) on Wednesday made a stunning comeback in the Delhi University Student Union (DUSU) polls after winning the top two posts of President and Vice President, while the RSS-backed Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which had dominated the student body for the last four years — settled for the posts of Secretary and Joint Secretary.

The, Left-backed All India Student Union of India (AISA) which has swept all the four posts in DU in coalition with two other groups, emerged as the third party in DU.

As soon as the trends starting pouring in, NSUI's followers began to celebrate in the University's North Campus and at Congress office at 10 Janpath.

The student group termed it a "major comeback," as the results came in the backdrop of its humiliating defeat in the JNU Student Union (JNUSU) election last week.

"This mandate is a clear indication that student fraternity have restored their faith in Congress and our beloved leader Rahul Gandhi. Also this mandate shows that students throughout the country have rejected the poisonous and divisive ideology of RSS," the NSUI said in a statement.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala called it a mandate against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "After Rajasthan, Punjab, now NSUI's win in Delhi student polls proves that the youth have rejected Modiji's false promises of acche din," he said.

The ABVP, however, claimed that the party has managed to maintain its support base in DU. "It's disappointing to lose two seats. But we have maintained our support base in DU and our votes haven't been reduced. We look forward to work together on student issues with the NSUI in DUSU as they have come at an equal platform now," said Saket Bahuguna, ABVP's national media convenor.

ABVP had won three seats last year.

NSUI's Rocky Tusheed won the presidential post by a margin of 1,590 votes defeating ABVP's Rajat Choudhary. Tusheed's candidature remained under a cloud until last Wednesday after his name was ommited from the final list issued by the University's Election Commission citing some disciplinary action against him.

The NSUI, however, claimed that the results of Joint Secretary post was "unconstitutional" and claimed that their candidate Avinash Yadav had actually won the post. Scores of NSUI supporters staged a protest outside the University's election commissioner's office demanding recounting of votes for the post.

"We have appealed to the University's grievence committee to look into the result of Joint Secretary post. It they won't take action we'll take the legal action," said Akshay Lakra, NSUI state president, adding that the student group has reclaimed Delhi UNiversity.

Tusheed, who is pursuing MA in Buddhist studies, moved the Delhi High Court challenging the decision following which the court had granted him an interim relief on September 8. It, however, ordered the University not to declare the results until the case is resolved.

On Tuesday, the Delhi High court had allowed DU to declare the results of the elections. However, it said that Rocky's result might get cancelled if his pending petition in the court gets dismissed on the next hearing scheduled for September 28.

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi's speech at the University of California, Berkeley, won the hearts of the student community, leading to the victory of NSUI candidates in Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU), Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken said today.
