The Delhi University (DU) is all set to offer Tamil and Bengali as optional languages in its newly introduced five-year integrated journalism course.

According to the University authorities, the decision was taken keeping in mind the popularity of Tamil in South East Asian countries, such as Singapore and Malaysia. "These languages will help the budding journalists as it will enable to be multilingual," a senior official said.

The course will offer various foreign languages, including Arabic, Spanish, and French. "For a journalism student, it's very important to be acquainted with international languages as this profession requires a lot of travelling," he said.

Clearing rumours regarding a separate entrance exam being conducted for this course, a senior varsity official confirmed that the admission will be merit based. "No separate entrance examination will be conducted for this course," he said.

The course fee will be Rs 30,000 per semester and 60 students will be admitted in the current academic year. "Several faculty members have objected to making the course self-financed as that would be difficult for the economically challenged section to afford it," the official said.

The university's Standing Committee on Academic Affairs gave its approval to the integrated course on June 9. It, however, needs to be approved by the Academic Council and the Executive Council of the University. It was proposed that the students would have to secure at least 50 per cent marks in Class XII, irrespective of the stream, to apply for the course.
