In almost a replay of the recent London car terror attack, late on Sunday evening, a speeding car rammed into a Delhi Police barricade near the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) on a road adjacent to the hangar, triggering panic among the security personnel.

Armed cops and CISF commandos rushed to the taxi only to find that it was being driven by a drunk person. The airport has been put on a high alert since the Westminster Bridge attack in London and a strict watch is being kept on vehicles.

According to the police, the incident took place between 10 pm and 10.20 pm, during the 8 pm to 8 am shift of Head Constable Rakesh Chander, 49, deployed at the Hanger picket. "Chander was on duty along with two CISF personnel when he saw a speeding Honda Amaze coming towards the picket. Chander waved to the driver, asking him to slow down, but he accelerated and the car ran over the cop, dragging him a few metres," a senior officer said.

The other armed officials at the picket then cautiously approached the vehicle and found the taxi driver in a heavily inebriated state. He was identified as Sanjay, 38. The vehicle with Uttar Pradesh registration number has been seized, police said.

"The Head Constable sustained severe head injuries and was taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. His condition is very critical. His family members have been informed and a case has been registered against Sanjay under sections 279 and 337 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). A medical examination confirmed that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. He has been arrested," the officer said.

Last week in London, a man mowed down pedestrians with his car near the Westminster Bridge before attacking a policeman, who was trying to stop him, with a knife. Three people were killed in the incident, which was termed a terrorist attack by the authorities.
