The Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal on Tuesday notified the delimitation of municipal wards in Delhi, whereby initiating the process of municipal elections in the national capital.

As per the notification, while the number of wards will remain the same at 272, the wards have undergone massive changes with regards to the geographical boundaries.

Senior officials of the state election body said that each ward now has an average of 60,000 people with an estimated 40,000 voters. The process has resulted in a major shift with some MLA constituencies now left with up to seven wards. Previously, each MLA constituency had four wards.

Meanwhile, the fresh geographical boundaries will now bring the wards in sync with the MLA constituency through well defined geo-characteristics.

The Delhi Municipal elections are likely to take place in April this year and political experts claim that delimitation will play a crucial role in the polls.

Currently, all three municipal corporations are governed by Bharatiya Janata Party. However, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party have also been riding high on their success in the previous elections.

Delimitation suggest that of the total 68 MLA constituencies, 34 have been affected significantly, with 13 constituencies now destined to have between five to seven wards and 21 constituencies where wards per state assembly all set to go down to three.

Currently, there are 272 municipal wards which fall under the jurisdiction of 68 Assembly seats, with four municipal wards in each of the Assembly seat. Both south and north Delhi Municipal Corporations have 104 wards each under their jurisdiction, the east Delhi Corporation has 64 wards. "The new delimitation has been based on 2011 census," an official said.
