As the Delhi Traffic Police made many key roads in and around central Delhi out of bounds for the funeral of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, traffic movement was hit on Friday. The last rites were performed at the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal at 4 pm with several national and international dignitaries attending to pay their last tributes to the stalwart. However, unlike normal days when the city reacts sharply towards jams, Delhiites braved the snarls as a lot of them said this was the least they could do as a mark of respect to the Jan Nayak.

Traffic slowed down in Central Delhi as many key roads including Shahjahan Road, Zakir Hussain Marg, Tilak Marg (from C-Hexagon to Tilak Bridge), Bhagwan Dass Road, Sikandra Road and Mathura Road were closed for vehicular movement. Since most of the roads remained closed till the culmination of the last rites, The advisory issued by traffic police suggested alternative routes such as Minto Road-Bhavbhuti Marg-Ajmeri Gate-Shradhanand Marg-Lahori Gate Chowk-Naya Bazar-Peeli Kothi-SP Mukherjee Marg to commute between north Delhi and Connaught Place

Metro that ran packed, became the preferred mode of conveyance for many to avoid getting caught in jams. "Snarls are expected given the respect Vajpayee commanded among millions of Indians. I don't mind travelling by metro for a day as a tribute to the tallest leader who did so much for the country," said Atreyi Goswami, a software engineer. "He was an institution in himself. We can brave the jams for a day for him. He commands this respect," said Harshad Kala, a freelance writer.

The Delhi Traffic Police had issued an advisory on Thursday evening, restricting traffic movement at many roads. The advisory suggested alternative routes such as Krishna Menon Marg, Sunehri Bagh Road, Tughlaq Road, Akbar Road, Tees January Marg, Janpath (from Hotel Claridges to Windsor Place), Mansingh Road, C-Hexagon from Shahjahan Road to Tilak Marg, Rajpath (from Mansingh Road to C-Hexagon), Ashoka Road (from Windsor Place to C-Hexagon), Kasturba Gandhi Marg (from Feroz Shah Road to C-Hexagon), and Copernicus Marg (from Mandi House to C-Hexagon).
