Delhi's power demand peaked to 6,934 MW on Friday, hitting an all-time high as the Capital reels under sultry weather. The Delhi government is expecting it to rise to 7,000 MW this year. "Highest electricity load ever of 6,934 MW at 15:28:33 hrs today in Delhi. May cross 7,000 MW this year," Delhi's Power Minister Satyendar Jain tweeted on Friday. Jain had earlier predicted 7,000 MW power demand, saying enough electricity was available to meet the rising demand.

According to experts, this is the fourth time in June that the power demand broke last year's record. The demand soared to 6,651 MW on June 1, breaking last year's June 6 record of 6,526 MW. "It was 6,562 MW on June 5 and 6,568 MW on June 7, other than today's highest level of 6,934 MW and previous high of 6,651 MW on June 1," a BSES spokesperson said.

"This year, the peak power demand crossed the 6,000 MW mark eight times," he said.

Tata Power DDL, which supplies to north and northwest Delhi, expects peak demand to touch 1,850 MW."we have made adequate arrangements to meet demand up to 2,200 MW, along with contingency planning through long-term tie-ups and power banking arrangements, and upgraded network to ensure regular supply," said Sanjay Banga, CEO, Tata Power-DDL.

Worried over power shortage, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had recently written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal seeking their intervention in the "crisis-like" situation developing in the Capital due to coal shortage.

Kejriwal, in his letter, told the Prime Minister that the high demand for power was due to the ongoing heatwave-like condition in Delhi. The amount of coal available in NCR, he said, was not even sufficient for one full day's power generation. Kejriwal has requested the PM to give necessary directions to the Railways for providing rakes/wagons on priority for transporation of coal.
