The Delhi Police busted a gang of burglars and apprehended two of its members with the assistance of 'Praharis' of Vasant Kunj on Sunday. The burglars intended to loot the house but were caught red-handed, all the stolen items were recovered.

According to the police, many burglaries were reported from Vasant Kunj. In order to solve these cases, the RWA guards registered under Prahari scheme were motivated to nab the culprits. The Prahari guards, Birpal, Lalu and Shailender were on their night duty in C-1, Vasant Kunj. While patrolling it was found that the light and fan of one of the flats was switched on, even when the owner was not at home. This sowed seeds of suspicion in the mind of Birpal and he immediately called a constable and informed him. In the meantime, the culprits also saw the guards and tried to escape. One of the three burglars managed to escape, while the rest of them were caught by the trio. The police immediately reached the spot and apprehended the burglars. A green-coloured purse containing Rs 200 and some documents, a ladies purse containing some documents, and some house-breaking equipment such as pipe, wrench and jammer were recovered from the burglars.

On interrogation, the accused Sonu (22), who belonged to a family with meagre resources, came in contact of one Raju who is a burglar. Raju used to collect information about the flats which were locked for two-three days. Later they used to enter the house by breaking the door or window and the other one who is a juvenile used to stand outside to alert his gang members. Moreover, it was revealed that they were fond of living a luxurious life and wear branded clothes and to meet these expenses they used to commit the crime.

The Praharies were suitably rewarded for their alertness." Further investigation of the case in progress. Efforts are afoot to nab the gang leader Raju," said Devendra Arya, Deputy Commissioner of Police ( South-West District).

The Delhi Police had launched the community policing scheme 'Prahari' to maintain law and order in the Outer district in February last year. The scheme was launched by Delhi Police chief Amulya Patnaik. 'Prahari' is an initiative to involve various stakeholders such as chowkidars, security guards and police mitras for the prevention of crime and act as the eye and ears of the police.
