Delhi Police have suspended three cops, including an ASI posted at Krishna Nagar police station for allegedly assaulting five family members of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Kanti Nagar's councillor Kanchan Maheshwari with sticks on Monday night.

According to the police, Maheshwari alleged that the cops assaulted his family members because one of her nephews, Rishabh Maheshwari had intervened in an argument that broke out between his former teacher's family and two men riding a bike over a minor accident.

"Around 10.30 pm, Rishabh was returning home when he saw occupants of an Innova car having an argument with two men whose bike was hit by their car. The car occupants were family members of his former teacher. So, he intervened to settle the matter," said Maheshwari in her complaint.

After resolving the matter, Rishabh started walking back home when the two bikers – a bouncer and a policeman in plain clothes – overpowered him and began assaulting him with sticks.

"Later, three more policemen reached the spot and started pushing Rishabh inside a restaurant and continued assaulting him. The councillor was in Defence Colony with her husband, Neeraj Maheshwari for some work at the time of the incident," said the councillor.

When the victim informed his family members, five people, who went to the spot, were also by the cops. They were later brought to the police station.

Meanwhile, some BJP councillors and party workers reached outside the police station and protested against the assault. The family members accused the Station House Officer (SHO) of the police station of inaction.

"Three policemen were suspended to ensure a fair probe by the vigilance team in the matter," said Nupur Prasad, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara).
