The Special Cell of Delhi police on Tuesday arrested an accused involved in drug trafficking from Behra village of Bareilly district. The accused identified as Ashfaq Khan has been processing and trafficking heroin in Delhi and neighbouring states for over 12 years. Khan has supplied about a hundred kilograms of heroin during this period, the police said.

Khan had been on the run since February, when his three associates Ram Nath, Virender Pal Singh and Parvej Khan were arrested by the northern range of the Special cell with five-kilo grams of heroin which they had procured from West Bengal on Khan's direction.

During the interrogation all three of them revealed that the drug trafficking racket in Delhi and neighbouring states is being run by Ashfaq who process the raw heroin at his residence in Bareilly.

Ashfaq, however, was on the run since February and multiple raids to nab him had gone unsuccessful until on Tuesday when the Special Cell on receiving a secret information that he would visit his home in Behra village of Bareilly district nabbed him from his residence.

It was in the period when opium cultivation was legal in Uttar Pradesh for medical and research purposes when Ashfaq started the supply of fine quality heroin. During that time he would cultivate, process and supply the heroine on his own, however, once opium cultivation was banned he shifted towards states like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan where the cultivation was still allowed. He procured the raw heroin from the Golden Triangle area (Lhasa, Thailand and Burma) via the North Eastern States.

Ashfaq's arrest has now brought up the increasing impact of the Golden Triangle on the illegal heroin trafficking business in India. In recent time, Ashfaq and many other drug traffickers have started to peddle drugs from countries like Myanmar which offer finner quality of drugs at a cheaper rate.
