Keeping women's safety in mind, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has introduced a new fleet of E-rickshaws at NCR metro stations in order to provide last mile connectivity. Unlike the common e-rickshaws, these battery-operated vehicles are GPS-enabled and have CCTVs installed. Also, these are better designed with covered cabins and a full windscreen.
The Delhi Metro connects the Capital to satellite towns such as Noida, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and areas of Outer Delhi. In these areas, lack of other means of public transport, during the late evening, has ensured commuters struggle to get home from the metro
The newly-designed e-rickshaws will ply from these stations covering a distance of 3-4 kms to the nearby residential colonies.
The first fleet of five e-rickshaws was flagged off on Monday, also World Environment Day, by Delhi Metro chief Mangu Singh from the DMRC headquarters. The five vehicles plied from the Vaishali metro station.
"The Delhi Metro is committed to eco-friendly initiatives. The battery vehicles besides providing last mile connectivity are non-polluting mode of transport. Also, it will encourage people for lesser use of personal vehicles. Moreover, it will come as a safer option for women commuters, as the vehicles will be available till late hours and with GPS and CCTVs will be under surveillance at all hours," said Singh.
According to DMRC officials, they have tied up with a service provider, who will be providing over 600 e-rickshaws over this year which will cover the eight metro stations in Noida and Ghaziabad (on the blue line).
"The modern e-rickshaws with covered cabins and full-front windscreen are comfortable and relatively safer with better balance. The facility of E-rickshaws at the stations in Gurugram and Faridabad will also get operational very shortly by another operator," said a senior DMRC official.
