Fire fighters struggled to reach the building where a fire broke out on Monday afternoon killing four of its occupants in the Karol Bagh's Gaffar market area. The fire official said the building falls under the red zone — the areas which are challenging for the fire officials to reach in time of crisis. Gaffar market is famous for its electronic gadgets. The average footfall is 5 lakh per day.

According to a fire official, in order to contain the fire, they had to lay a water hose through the houses on the front road in order to reach the affected area. Even though the fire was not very big, this caused the firefighters more time to completely put off the blaze.

Speaking to DNA, Atul Garg, Chief Fire Officer (CFO), said while the incident occurred due an error by a factory worker, Karol Bagh as a region is in itself considered a red zone because, in case of a fire, it is tough for the fire brigade to pass amid the low-hanging cables, illegally parked vehicles on both sides of a single lane road, and the already narrow lanes.

Expressing his concern, he said, "While narrow lanes make it tough for us to reach the spot, illegal use of premise is also an issue," said Garg. Explaining the problem, he claimed that various illegal factories have been running in the premises, which are actually supposed to a residential space.

"There are huge possibilities that when we reach a spot thinking of it as a house, but in reality it turns out to be an illegal firecracker factory. In that case, our preparation on the spot falls short," said Garg.

On Monday too, the fire officers got a call informing that a fire broke out in a house while when they reached the spot they found that the house was used for commercial purpose and a factory was run inside.

"The same problems we face in Chandani Chowk, Geeta Colony, Shahdara, Seelampur where it is next to impossible for the fire tenders to reach on time due to the narrow lanes, unauthorised parking and traffic issues," added Garg.
