The three police officers, who received bullet injuries in the encounter in Chattarpur on Saturday, got rid of the bullets in three surgeries performed by a team of experts at the AIIMS Trauma Centre on Wednesday.

All the three cops had been given an option to retain or get rid of the bullets.

"While the surgery on two cops with bullets in their triceps did not take long, the third one took about two hours where the bullet was in a difficult position and we had to do an ultrasound-guided probe for the localisation of the foreign body. The bullet had travelled from his right arm to space between his shoulder wing and ribs," said Dr Biplab Mishra, Professor of Surgery, AIIMS Trauma Centre.

"General or local anaesthesia was given to the patients for the surgery. The bullet fragments taken out from the body are heavy metal, probably made of lead. We have also cleaned and treated the entry wounds and removed the dirty tissues around it," said Dr Mishra.

The three patients — Krishan Kumar, 51, with a bullet in the right side of his chest; Gurdeep Singh, 28, with a bullet on his left tricep, and Raj Singh, 50, the bullet on his left tricep, are now better and will be discharged this week.

The criminal, Kapil, however, will have to retain all the three bullets as he is, too, shocked to undergo the surgery, say doctors.

"We do not know what the bullets are made of in this case, but in most cases, it is not urgent to remove as they do not cause any danger to the vital organs thus we have been taking a non-operative management approach," said the doctor.

After losing four of his associates, Kapil turned out to be very lucky as none of the three bullets in his body were life-threatening for him. With one bullet each in his stomach, chest, and hip, none caused any serious damage to his organs. Currently, in shock, decisions for him are taken by doctors.
