Despite all efforts, the Delhi Police have failed to trace even one source of rumours that spread amid the demonestization drive, triggering chaos in the country.

A special cyber team of 14 people was formed to monitor the social media but it seems that most rumours on the Internet were re-tweeted, shared or re-posted, obscuring the source from where they originated.

The Delhi Police have now asked the citizens to inform them in case they come across any such message on WhatsApp or a person spreading any rumour through word of mouth. In its advisory issued on the social media, the department stated that strict action will be taken against mischievous elements spreading baseless rumours.

"Those found to be involved will be prosecuted under section 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Citizens are requested to disregard such rumours on social media, which are causing fear and alarm in general public," stated the advisory.

The police have also deployed its personnel outside the banks and ATMS, who are facilitating the process of demonetization and trying to counsel the crowd.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, a tweet went viral regarding the death of a 48-year-old man. Debt-ridden Saud Ir Rahman had been standing in a bank queue in Central Delhi for the last three days and suffered a cardiac arrest. His friend Siraj said: "He called me and told me that he was unwell. I rushed outside the Bank Of India (BOI) branch in Hauz Khaji and took him to the hospital, where he died during treatment."

Man hurt inside bank

A 37-year-old person was injured inside a bank on Tuesday, reportedly due to the negligence of the management. A Delhi Police officer said: "He had gone to withdraw cash when a heavy cabin glass inside the bank fell on him. He suffered injuries on his right shoulder and leg. A case has been registered against the bank management in Naraina under two IPC sections. The bank officials will be called for questioning soon."
