To commemorate the 68th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and to apparently impress him, the Delhi unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday launched a slew of welfare programmes that will continue for a week.

Local party leaders will undertake welfare initiatives through the national Capital.

Senior BJP leaders and Union ministers, including Harsh Vardhan and Smriti Irani, will inaugurate host of welfare initiatives for people in various parts of Delhi as part of local unit's programme through the week.

Flagging off the welfare initiative, which will focus on cleanliness as the theme, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari and senior party leader Vinay Sahasrabudhe inaugurated the programme at Kirti Nagar on Monday morning.

Tiwari 'gifted' free of cost gas connections to women of JJ colony. Addressing the women, he said, "The Prime Minister has been working relentlessly for the welfare of women. Lack of gas connection and cooking on chulha is a health hazard for a lot of women even now. This scheme will take care of their health." Union Health Minister JP Nadda inaugurated a health camp along with east Delhi MP Maheish Girri at Vishwas Nagar.

Speaking on the occasion, Nadda hailed the Prime Minister for dedicating his birthday to "service". "All of us are observing the day as 'sewa diwas'. This says a lot about his inspiring personality", he said. Nadda also swept a street in a slum cluster near the health camp.

Later, Nadda said under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, 1.5 lakh health sub-centres and primary health centres will be converted into health and wellness centres. The sub-centres, taking care of pregnant women and infants, will now undertake to check up of hypertension, oral cancer, breast cancer, tuberculosis, mental health, leprosy and dental care.

Irani celebrated Modi's birthday at RK Puram meeting students and offering chocolates and sweets to them. Union Forest and Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan offered voluntary labour on the occasion at Ashok Vihar. He also distributed tricycles and hearing aid to around 200 specially abled people.
