On Friday night, Shabnam Siddiqui(30), a resident of block A Mangolpuri, was attacked with acid while she went to the market. The crime is reported at the Mongolpuri Police Station against her brother-in-law and his wife.

"Shabnam went to the market to buy groceries when she was surrounded by Shamsuddin (brother- in- law), Nazmin (Shamsuddin's wife) and her two brothers — Javed and Sona. After thrashing her, they tried to throw acid on her face. She struggled to break free but was unable to do so. Not only acid was thrown at her face, but they also tried to forcefully pour acid in her mouth too. This is not the first time they attacked our family. In the past, they have sent us threat calls and when they were not getting any results, they accused Shabnam's husband of rape attempt on Nazmin which was completely baseless." Said Shakeela, Shabnam's sister- in- law.

Shabnam was attacked at around 8 pm when she was in the market. She was immediately rushed to Sanjay Gandhi hospital. She was given primary medical aid and then she was referred to R M L Hospital at Connaught Place. She is being treated in R M L Hospital where she is reported to have sustained 10 per cent acid burn on her body and minor injuries on the back. She is admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (C CU).

"The brothers have had this dispute since 2017 when, following a dispute, both, Shamsuddin's and the victim's family, started living separately. A few months back it got worse when Shamsuddin started to threaten Shabnam's family on phone calls and when we went to complain about their repeated act of threatening, they got even more violent. Even after the complaints, police took no action against them" said Nazim, Shabnam's nephew.

Shamsuddin and victim's husband had a long going dispute over their ancestral property. Shabnam's family was constantly threatened by Shamsuddin and his wife Nazmin. Nazmin's brothers, who are also involved in the attack, are also accused of petty thefts. They have also been sent to jail a couple of times in the past.

An investigation is going on, but the attackers are still on loose. Police said they are probing the matter and trying to nab the accused at the earliest.
