It's a thankless job! The phrase is often used by the security force personnel, especially the police, who complain that no matter how well they maintain the law and order situation in an area, even one small misstep can become a cardinal sin for them.

In this world of cynics, however, there are some who become an epitome of selfless service and professionalism, such as Baljeet Singh Rana. The dedication of the 65-year-old, who did not take a single day off from 1998 till his retirement in August, 2012, can be judged from the fact that even afterwards, serving the public remained his top priority. So much so that Rana was called back and reinstated in the force after his retirement.

He was inducted in the Delhi Police as a Constable in 1972. Since then, he has been posted in the deployment branch of the New Delhi district, which witnesses protests and dharnas from all sections of society almost everyday.

Senior officers are of the opinion that the deployment unit could not have functioned the same way if Rana had not been there.

"I do not want to sit at home. I joined the force with an aim to serve the people. I want to serve in the police force till my last breath,"says Rana, who has the fitness of a 25-year-old and can still run for miles without any problem.

Though his wife and children hardly get to see him, they are very proud of him. "He has followed the same routine for the last three decades. He eats the same food and exercises regularly,"his wife says.

Rana was promoted as a Head Constable in 1982, then as an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in 1998, and a Sub-Inspector in 2008. Recalling his earlier days, he says the toughest times he faced were the 1984 sikh riots and the outrage in 2012, after the brutal gang-rape and murder of a paramedical student in Delhi.

"Earlier, the functioning was different, and so were the duty hours. We could take some rest. But nowadays people are very aggressive, and so, the force needs to be aggressive too," he says.

The dedicated officer has been decorated with several awards. In 2016, he was awarded with the Delhi Police Excellence Services, and in 2012 and 2001, he was honoured with the award for meritorious service by the President of the country.
