A 50-year-old policeman — broken by his deteriorating health – ended his life on Wednesday by jumping in front of a metro train at Uttam Nagar metro station. A suicide note found in Sub Inspector Hans Ram Barala's shirt pocket said his prolonged illness had driven him to take the extreme step. The incident occurred at around 11 am; Barala is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Metro) Pankaj Kumar Singh, Barala – who originally hailed from Rajathan and resided in Uttam Nagar — had been on leave for three months after being diagnosed for stomach tuberculosis. "He had been under heavy medical treatment and was also admitted to a hospital," he added.

"He jumped in front of a metro train going to Noida," said a senior CISF officer. "The shift in-charge Sub Inspector Pankaj Patwari and Controller Shailender Singh pulled up Barala's body with the help of the other staff. It was taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital for post mortem."
