Civic report claims a 10-fold rise in dengue cases this year

Even the number of chikungunya cases has increased, with 98 cases being reported so far. By this month in 2016, not a single case had been reported.

As many as 45 cases of dengue have been reported in Delhi so far this year, a 10-fold increase as compared to the last year, according to a South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) report, which was released on Monday. The report revealed that only four cases of the vector-borne disease were reported by this month in 2016.

"All hospitals have been alerted. Doctors have been directed to treat patients with fever-like symptoms on a priority basis. Hospitals have been asked to keep some beds aside for such patients. The government is taking all preventive measures," Dr SM Raheja, Additional Director General of Health Services, said.

Even the number of chikungunya cases has increased, with 98 cases being reported so far. By this month in 2016, not a single case had been reported.

On May 13, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had issued special directions to deal with the mosquito menace in the Capital. The directions were issued at a high-level meeting of officials from the municipal corporations, the Delhi government, and others. The government has also directed all its hospitals to increase the number of beds by up to 20 per cent. Besides, a call centre has been set up by the government, where people can get information about the availability of beds in a particular hospital. In addition, the government has also decided to ban the sale of Brufen group of medicines during dengue or chikungunya season.

Similarly, on April 29, Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal had directed the Delhi government-run Lok Nayak Hospital to keep beds ready for dengue and chikungunya patients, in the event of an outbreak of the vector-borne diseases in the city. The LG had instructed the hospitals to have sufficient number of beds for the coming monsoon season.
