Within a week of Prime Minister Narendra Modi warning cow vigilantes to not take law in their hands, the state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Delhi trained its guns on "rivals" for spreading "propaganda of intolerance and lynching".

During a seminar held on Sunday, National Party Spokesperson Sambit Patra and state BJP Chief Manoj Tiwari openly took a swipe at Congress leaders and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The seminar, titled 'From Intolerance to Mob lynching — How Propaganda Machinery Works' was held at the BJP Delhi office.

Known for not mincing his words, Patra took a harsh dig at Banerjee, Sandeep Dikshit and the 'award vaapsi' brigade. Calling them rudaalis (professional mourners), he launched a scathing attack on them for playing politics on the deaths of Junaid, Akhlaque and others.

"These are the people who try to shamelessly cash in on tragedies such as deaths. It is these very kind of people who are a threat to the nation and rashtravaad," he said. He further upped the pitch by bringing in the issue of current violence in Bengal. "She (Banerjee) can even sell off the country to appease her idea of so-called secularism and minorities," Patra said.

Both BJP leaders castigated the Congress and the Left parties for remaining silent when Hindus are attacked. They claimed the party has been working tirelessly for the development of the nation. Questioning the motive of protests such as 'Not In My Name', they alleged that the 'award vaapsi brigade' was cherry picking. "It is not an easy task to fight forces that have different yardsticks to rally support behind such victims," Tiwari said.

They also criticised Dikshit for insulting General Bipin Rawat, and the Kashmiri separatist leaders for supporting Burhan Wani. Patra called the shrillness surrounding intolerance a deliberate narrative to break the nation apart and put spanner in the works of Modi's development agenda of India, the name of which the Opposition was sullying by calling it 'lynchistan'.
