The rape of an eight-month-old baby on Sunday has sent shockwaves throughout the Capital. Strong reactions from activists and social media renewed the anger that has not been seen since the 'Nirbhaya' case, when people came on the roads to demand justice.

Swati Maliwal, chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women summed up the sentiments of many when she tweeted. "The worst has happened. An 8-month-old baby has been brutally raped in the Capital and is battling for her life in a Hospital. Am totally numb. Terrified to face her! Please please pray for her."

The child is currently on the ventilator and fighting with the pain and trauma, as her mother sits beside her, went through a three-hour long surgery on Monday. Her injuries required stitches in her private parts but she is now critical but stable. However, due to the immense pain after the incident and surgery, she is being kept on sedatives and cries every time she gains consciousness.

"The baby was brought into the Emergency with rectal and perineal tears (or laceration), which was a clear indication of sexual assault. In a long surgery, we have repaired the tears and she is medically stable now, but the overall mental and physical recovery would take a long time," said a senior doctor.

Amid all this, the accused has been arrested by the Delhi Police and has confessed to his crime. His wife, however, came crying to the hospital asking the child's family to spare her husband as she needs him. Though she was asked to leave by the victim's mother.

DCW TO HELP PARENTS

"DCW shall give Rs 50,000 to parents of the 8-month-old rape survivor today itself to support them. Her parents r v poor daily wage laborers & need financial support. Further, we have filed an application in court today seeking interim compensation for baby in the matter," Maliwal tweeted.
