The sweeping mandate received by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assembly elections to Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand has elated its student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Hailing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's good work for the BJP victory in these states, the ABVP on Saturday said the development marks "end to caste and ideology politics in these states, especially in UP.

"BJP has won the elections based on its development agenda. Now, this marks an end to caste and identity politics in these states," ABVP National Media Convener Saket Bahuguna said.

Taking a dig at the Samajwadi Party (SP)-Congress alliance in UP, Bhaguna said, "People in UP now look beyond caste and identity. The alliance members thought they could win by polarising Muslims and Jats. But this time, BJP won even in Muslim and Jat-dominated areas."

On being queried on BJP's loss in Punjab, Bahuguna said, "There was anti-incumbency factor at play in Punjab, due to which people chose Congress over the BJP. That's the power of democracy."

The Congress-backed National Students' Union of India (NSUI), however, termed BJP's victory in UP an act of "polarisation". "It was clear-cut polarisation from BJP's side when the Prime Minister himself jumped in and talked about 'Shamshaan' and 'Qabristan' during the election campaign," NSUI Delhi President Akshay Lakra said.

"BJP's dream of a Congress-mukt Bharat can never be fulfilled. Congress has performed considerably well in Punjab and it will win a majority in the upcoming Delhi Municipal elections as well," he added.

The Left-affiliated student parties maintained silence over Saturday's results. "BJP may have won elections but it can never win the hearts," tweeted Shehla Rashid, a Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student and a member of the All India Students' Association (AISA).

JNU Vice-Chancellor (V-C) also tweeted about BJP's electoral victory, saying: "People of India have once again demonstrated overwhelmingly that we stand for development and inclusivity."
