Police on Monday arrested the absconding associate of a criminal with whom a joint team of Delhi and UP Police had an encounter in UP's Amroha last month. One accused was arrested following the encounter in which two gangsters had opened fire on the police team while fleeing with a robbed car from Delhi.

The accused has been identified as 30-year-old Nawab Qureshi, a resident of Bulandshehar. His aide who was arrested earlier was Abdul Saddam (19).

It was during the early hours of January 29, around 3:30 am when a PCR call was received at the police post in Sriniwas Puri reporting an incident of gunpoint carjacking near Okhla Mandi area. The complainant, Shankar Yadav, told the police that his Tata Indica car had been robbed at gunpoint by two men. GPS installed in the vehicle showed that the car was moving towards Amroha in UP. The police traced the car and also informed their UP counterparts.

When joint teams of UP and Delhi Police intercepted the identified car, the two occupants, Qureshi and Saddam, opened fire on the police team. In retaliatory firing, while Saddam was shot at, Qureshi managed to flee.

DCP southeast, Chinmoy Biswal said it was last week when information was received that Qureshi would visit home to meet his wife.

"A police team was immediately rushed to Khurja and a trap was laid near the village. He was spotted around 6:10 pm and was arrested from Chotte Hakim Chowk in Khurja, UP, by the team of Sriniwaspuri police post," the DCP added.
