A day before the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) was to organise a massive protest to mark one month of Najeeb Ahmed's disappearance, the varsity administration issued a notice to three of its students for "violating the university's rules and regulations" by holding a series of protests at the campus.

JNUSU and several other student organisations had announced to hold a massive protest — Chalo JNU — on November 15.

The notice was issued to JNUSU former Vice-Presidents Amal Pullarkkat and Shehla Rashid, and former President Akbar Chaudhary on Sunday night.

"Some students have been repeatedly violating University rules by staging protests, sit-ins, confinement of officials and obstructing the flow of traffic," the notice read. "Such activities have not only created hurdles for the smooth functioning of the University but also caused inconvenience to students, staff and teachers," it added.

The administration warned the students to immediately desist from "such acts", failing which "disciplinary action" will be taken against them.

JNU students have been organising protests since October 15, when Ahmed, a first-year MSc student, was found to be missing following an altercation with some ABVP activists the night before.

Slamming the administration for issuing the notice, students said: "The administration should have shown this promptness in issuing notice against people responsible for Najeeb's disappearance."

Students of Jamia Milia Islamia also extended solidarity with JNUSU and announced to join Tuesday's protest. "We have appealed to all Jamia students to participate in Chalo JNU march to intensify the demand of Justice for Najeeb," Jamia Students Forum (JSF) stated in a circular.

Later on Monday night, the JNU administration issued another notice, claiming that the students did not take prior permission to organise the Chalo JNU march from the authorities concerned.

"It has come to the notice of the administration that JNUSU has given a call for the march without any prior permission from the competent authority of the University. In the light of recent happenings, it is of utmost importance to maintain the safety and security in the campus," the notice read.

It added: "The administration is also receiving complaints that outsiders are coming and staying at Students Activity Centre in the night during these type of events. JNUSU is advised to discourage such activities, if any."

Meanwhile on Sunday, students held a sit-in protest at the varsity's north gate, demanding bonus for university security guards. "The gate was shut due to the stubbornness of the JNU administration and its absolute reluctance to resolve the issue of bonus irregularities," Shehla Rashid said.
