Around 800 trucks were stranded for 30 hours outside the Inland Container Depot (ICD) after an intelligence input was received regarding 40 containers containing suspicious material on Saturday. Customs officials are examining the containers to ascertain the exact nature of the material. Sources revealed that an input regarding an explosive substance being present in the containers was received by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). The entry and exit to the ICD was stopped and the area was cordoned off by Delhi Police.

Till late evening on Saturday, none of the authorities had confirmed what the unidentified material was.

Another input stated that fake Indian currency notes (FICN) in large quantities will be smuggled in the country through sea routes. The containers reached the ICD in Tughlakabad, which is a dry port, on Friday evening and ever since then the movement of the trucks that had arrived to load and unload was discontinued.

The containers were thoroughly examined even though senior officials claimed that there was no radio-active substance present. Some trucks that had loaded their containers and materials could not leave as the said items were to be re-checked and re-examined by the custom officials.

Hundreds of truck drivers were visibly disturbed as they have been standing there since Friday evening. “I came here at 5 pm on Friday and unloaded my truck at the export unit. My truck was carrying spare parts of tractors.

We don’t know why they have stopped the movement. The trucks which entered haven’t come out and those outside have been asked not to go out,” said Yograj Sharma, a truck driver from Wazirabad.

“We all are facing problems but we are helpless. Driving the truck is our bread and butter and we need the money. Some truck drivers need to reach different locations outside the state but feel helpless about it. We just earn Rs 5,000-7,000 a month and if we get late then our salary will be cut as well. Usually when we come, we leave in about two or three hours,” said Jagdish Gaur, who had come to load his truck.

CONCOR provides services to the two sectors, one being domestic and the other being import/export. In terms of the domestic sector, it is the client which gives the declaration of the goods being carried and in the import and export sector, it is customs officials who give the clearance if anything is suspicious.

“DRI wanted to examine import containers on specific intelligence input. As the custodian, CONCOR is facilitating the check providing the requisite assistance and information. This affected deliveries by road. Acceptance of export cargo and containers into ICD is going on as normal and so are rail operations,” said V Kalyana Rama, CMD, CONCOR.
