Two major hospitals in the national Capital misdiagnosed the cause of pain in the stomach of an eight-year-old and one continued to treat her for four months while she only kept getting sicker. Currently getting treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the patient has been told that her condition was made worse by the hospitals that failed to diagnose the real cause of her pain.

Bhakti Kumar experienced a severe pain in her stomach in May this year and her family took her to the Pt Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital at Malviya Nagar, where the doctors said that she has 'stones' in her stomach and prescribed medicines. For four months, the hospital kept her on medicines to cure the kidney stones while the pain only kept getting worse.

Her father, Pramod Kumar, an employee with a private firm, finally decided to take her to a bigger hospital. "I had no other option but take her to some other hospital where they would diagnose the real problem. This has made me distrust government-run hospitals. For now, I only wish that my daughter gets better," said Kumar.

The girl was then taken to Safdarjung hospital, one of the largest hospitals in the country, where she was diagnosed with 'appendix' for her pain. The treatment again did not soothe the child and then she was taken to AIIMS. AIIMS, however, initially refused to admit her due to unavailability of beds and referred her to Ram Manohar Lohia, but called her back 12 hours later after a bed was available.

She was diagnosed with intestinal tuberculosis at AIIMS and the pain is now reducing which confirms that she finally is in the right care.

Over misdiagnosis, Safdarjung Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Rajendra Sharma said that he is not updated on the case but any of these three reasons are considered for pain in the stomach.
