The 22.5km Vikaspuri to Wazirabad stretch will now be completely signal-free, with the Delhi government all set to inaugurate the final stretch near Mukundpur on Friday. According to senior officials, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia will inaugurate the flyover. The government has claimed that it saved Rs 12 crore in the project.

The flyover will have six carriageways supported by twin piers. The project is expected to have major environmental benefits. "The smooth and uninterrupted movement of traffic on this intersection will cut emission of at least 4,975 tonnes of carbon dioxide per day, which is equal to the absorbing rate of 2.29 lakh trees,"said an official.

The official added that more than 1.75 lakh vehicles use this stretch daily, and the signal-free stretch will account for more than Rs 5 crore every year due to man-hours and fuel saved, and lower carbondioxide emissions.

A part of the flyover on one side has four lanes after it merges with the loops. The road below has six carriageways, and both sides have a 2m cycle track with a 2.5m-wide footpath and a green belt,"said an official.

The signal-free corridor has three elevated stretches and three flyovers. The three elevated corridors, all of which are now open, include Vikaspuri-Meera Bagh, Mangolpuri-Madhuban Chowk and Madhuban Chowk-Mukarba Chowk.
