It won't be that easy for motorists to jump a traffic signal or speed up near unmanned signals in the Capital anymore. The Delhi Traffic Police plan to put up 200 high-definition, night-vision cameras at major intersections with an intention to rein in the offenders.

These cameras will not only capture traffic violations, but will also provide real-time footage of other crimes, including snatching, robberies, and car-jacking. Since many crossings in the city are not manned, especially late in the night, these cameras are technically equipped to detect violations such as over-speeding, officials said.

The challans will be then be sent to the offenders' homes, based on the registration number of the vehicle. "These sophisticated, long-range cameras will be installed on all major crossings and signals. They will help in better enforcement of traffic laws and overall discipline, as we will have 24x7 real-time footage of what is going on the city roads. The cameras will help keep an eye on locations that cannot be tracked throughout the day," Special CP (Traffic) Ajay Kashyap said.

"We have sent the proposal to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). Once we receive the ministry's approval, we will float tenders. The entire process will take some time," he added.

According to officers, the installation of cameras will act as a huge deterrent.

"Once the commuters see the huge cameras installed on intersections, they will think twice before jumping a red light or speeding their way out. Also, it will help curb other crimes and facilitate speedy investigation in cases of accidents, snatching, and robberies,"a senior officer said.

The idea of installing HD cameras, however, is not new. It has been floated several times by the police but could never be implemented.
