The Delhi Police is yet to make any headway in the murders of a taxi driver and a head constable, struggling to nail suspects and facing hurdles in moving ahead with the probe. The taxi driver was murdered barely 400 metres away from the police station in the Kotla Mubarakpur area of south Delhi, while the constable was shot 200 metres from his house. Lack of CCTV footage and contradicting views given by those quizzed have also left the police puzzled.

On September 8, a man working with Uber was shot by three unidentified men. The deceased, identified as Umesh, was talking to his friend Hemant while his car was parked nearby. It was suspected that the accused's car brushed past Umesh's, which led to an argument that ended in Umesh's death.

Vijay Kumar, deputy commissioner of police (South), said they are still investigating. "We had detained three suspects, but released them later. The only eyewitness of the murder, Hemant, is continuously changing his statement. He was in an inebriated condition at the time. He remains the main suspect, but there is no concrete evidence against him," Kumar said.

Umesh's family is still trying to come to terms with the loss of their sole breadwinner. "It's been 15 days since my husband was found murdered. The police hasn't been able to do anything. I want justice for my husband," said Geeta, deceased's wife.

On September 11, a head constable with the Delhi Police was on his way to the market when he was shot dead by unknown assailants in southeast Delhi's Jaitpur area. The deceased, Ram Awtar Kholwar, a 2003 batch officer, was posted at the Ambedkar Nagar police station.

The police is investigating the involvement of people known to Kholwar, and is also probing the possibility that he was killed because he had spotted people carrying out illegal activities. Kholwar received a bullet below his ribs.

"Since the crime took place after dark and there were no CCTV cameras installed at the spot, police is trying to look for eyewitnesses. Several teams have been formed and we are hopeful of an arrest soon," said Chinmoy Biswal, deputy commissioner of police (southeast).

More than 20 people have been quizzed in the case. Kholkar was recently awarded an appreciation certificate and a cash reward after he arrested around eight offenders and contributed to investigations in several important cases in the last two months.

He is survived by his wife and two children, aged ten and six. His elder brother also works with the Delhi Police.
