Funds that will be raised by the exhibition will go to the organisations working in the "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" campaign, launched by the government.
"After last census, we were shocked to see the declining sex ratio in at least 11 states of our country. Then we came up with this idea to promote this cause through art," says chief executive of VHAI, Alok Mukhopadhayay. The resources and public awareness generated from this Art Exhibition and future events all over the country will go to strengthen the organizations working for this cause, throughout the country, he said.
A huge collage of 72 paintings by Vikash Sharma, display different shades of women and how various happenings in society like politics, caste, class and gender attempt to control her life. "I tried to capture an accurate picture of women in society. And wanted to showcase how today's women have denied to be controlled and are leading their lives independently," says Sharma.
Some artists have attempted to blend mythology with reality, like Gogi Saroj, who has portrayed the mythological "Kamdhenu". "Usually exhibitions are confined to retrospectives and one-man shows, but this high end conglomerate of artistry open to the general public showcases several master works are to be viewed under a single roof," says artist Nin Taneja.
The exhibition also provides an opportunity to have a private tete-a-tete with the creator of the work to its visitors. "This is fascinating for the artists as well, as it is a nostalgic memory recall as many of them have a cache of incidents, and a flurry of experimentation that their paintings embodied," says Taneja. A sculpture by Nand Gopal, showcases a women with wings flying endlessly to achieve her dreams and desires. Some artists particularly worked to capture the sensuality of women.
The exhibition, which was inaugurated on August 28 is scheduled be on display till September 1 at Visual Art Gallery of the India Habitat Centre.
