A 12-year-old girl was found murdered at her residence in northeast Delhi's New Usmanpur area, police said on Wednesday.

The incident came to light when the victim's mother saw her semi-naked blood soaked body lying on the floor of the house last night, they said, adding, a case of rape and murder has been registered at New Usmanpur Police Station.

The victim used to stay with her mother as a tenant in New Usmanpur colony. She was the youngest of her five siblings and was the studying in class sixth in a nearby government school.

"The minor was alone at home, as schools are closed due to summer vacations. When her mother, who works in Daryaganj, returned, she found her lying on the floor unconscious in semi-naked condition," a senior police officer said.

Her mother immediately raised an alarm and neighbours rushed the girl to nearby Jagpravesh Chandra hospital where doctors declared her dead, police said.

As news of the incident spread, hundreds of irate local residents gathered outside the police station. Heavy police presence was deployed in the locality on Wednesday. Police have so far has detained three persons, including the landlord and his son who are being interrogated.

Victim's mother told the cops that when she reached home she found the main door locked from inside.

"She went to her house from another door which opens into another tenant's room, who is not in Delhi for the past few days. This door usually remains close even as the landlord and his son knew about it," he said.

According to police, the girl was first sexually assaulted and later strangled to death. However, post-mortem report is awaited.

"We have questioned several persons in this case. Three teams have been constituted to crack the case. We are also waiting for the autopsy report, which will throw more light in the case," the officer said.
