High drama ensued at the Tihar jail early on Friday, when 11 prisoners of the high security Kasturi ward allegedly inflicted injuries on themselves in a bid to get out of the jail. Earlier in the day, six other inmates had fought among themselves, resulting in injuries. All the 17 inmates were taken to hospital amid heavy security.

The incident was reported around midnight, when authorities received a call from jail number 3 about a ruckus in the ward. Officials said six inmates lodged in the high security ward got involved in a violent scuffle following an argument. They had all sustained minor injuries and had to be taken to hospital.

“Following the incident, other prisoners of the ward also demanded to be let out of their cells. When senior officers of the ward turned down the request, the inmates took out sharp improvised weapons and inflicted injuries on their ears, necks, faces, hands and chests. They also started attacking each other. More security personnel had to be called in to control the situation,” a senior Tihar officer said.

Officers said that when these 11 inmates were being taken to hospital, they vandalised a jail ambulance. The Kasturi ward inmates are known to create ruckus and, therefore, are kept under a tight vigil. In the past as well, prisoners have used blades to attack their rivals.

“Usually, these weapons are improvised. The prisoners use metal pipes, spoons, exhaust fan blades, or window frames. At times, prohibited items hidden in tennis balls, socks, and other items, are flung in from outside,” an officer said.

Sources said whenever these prisoners are taken to hospital, they somehow get access to tobacco and other banned items. This time, however, they were taken to the hospital amid heavy security, and all necessary precautions were taken, officers said.

“Security has been stepped up following the incident. An internal inquiry has also been initiated. No case was registered in this regard till Friday evening but an investigation is on,” the officer added.
