With Team India missing the World Cup final bus to Lord's, questions are being raised over the manner in which decisions were taken by the team management and the five-member national senior selection committee.

The first indication of that has come from the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) chairman Vinod Rai, who said that "there will be a review meeting once the coach and the captain are back from their breaks". Rai, however, has not fixed a time frame yet for the same.

However, a senior official in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has told DNA that "the five selectors are also under the lens for not picking the best team for the World Cup".

"The selection of Vijay Shankar, the Tamil Nadu all-rounder, was always debated inside BCCI. How was he picked ahead of others, like Ambati Rayudu, for the No. 4 spot needs to be debated in the review meeting," the BCCI source said without wishing to be named.

It is also learnt that a few players inside the Team India dressing room were also unhappy over Rayudu's ouster and the way Shankar was picked specifically for the No. 4 spot despite having nothing much to show prior to this.

"It was certainly not for his ability but his specific role in the playing XI. Shankar is a fine player but on what basis was an all-rounder picked for an important No. 4 position," the BCCI official asked. "We (in BCCI) have been told that more than a couple of players were surprised over this particular decision of the selectors."

That said, the selection committee also takes the view of the captain before finalising the squad. And that's the reason Virat Kohli will also be required to answer a few queries raised after India's semifinal loss to New Zealand.

Rayudu was not even drafted as a replacement after the injury of Shankar. Perhaps, his '3D glasses' tweet after his ouster that took a dig at the selectors had a part ot play.

Some key points likely to be discussed in the review meeting are: Why was Rayudu persisted with till the last moment when the selection panel had another player in the mind for No. 4 slot? What prompted selectors to pick Dinesh Karthik – who had a poor IPL season before the selection – as the second wicketkeeper ahead of young Rishabh Pant?

Regarding the debate about demoting MS Dhoni to No. 7 in the semifinal, it is learnt that it was batting coach Sanjay Bangar's decision to send Karthik and Hardik Pandya above Dhoni.

It could be one of the reasons that Bangar has not been asked to stay on, while head coach Ravi Shastri along with other members of the support staff have been handed a 45-day extension after their contract ended post World Cup.

India is scheduled to play two Tests, three ODIs and as many T20Is in an away series against the West Indies starting August 3.
