Australia were poorly bowled out for 239 runs after hosts England set a world record by scoring 481 runs in 50 overs.

Hundreds from Alex Hales, who made 147 on his home ground, Nottinghamshire, and Jonny Bairstow, whose 139 was his fourth century in six matches at this level, helped England surpass their own previous all-time ODI record of 444 for three against Pakistan set at Trent Bridge in 2016.

Talking of the Australian bowlers, Andrew Tye was the worst of the lot as he joined Hales and Bairstow to finish a century; the only difference was his hundred came with the ball. Meanwhile, Jhye Richardson fell short of eight runs from his hundred with the ball; Marcus Stoinis gave away 85 runs and spinner Ashton Agar 70.

"Just woke up and saw the score in England. What the hell happened over there and what is going on boys ? Gulp.....", tweeted Shane Warne.

Shocked by the current state of affairs, Clarke could not come up with words and used emojis instead.

For Warne, it would have been ironic, because it was the same day when he had led Australia to a second World Cup title. In the 1999 World Cup final against Pakistan, Shane Warne led the Australian attack with four scalps and the other wickets were shared between Glenn McGrath, Tom Moody, Damien Fleming and Paul Reiffel, as Pakistan were bundled out cheaply for 132 runs.

During the chase, Australia lost two wickets but eventually sealed the match with 29.5 overs to spare and lifted their second World Cup trophy.

On June 20, 1999, Australia had joined the mighty West Indies to become only the second side to have won a Cricket World Cup for the second time. Nineteen years later, the current Australian generation suffered the worst ODI defeat in terms of runs (242).
